Security And Sending Money Safely

CodeCash transactions are linked via a user’s unique QR code and / or username, so you will never need to share any sensitive financial or personally identifiable information when sending or receiving money via the app. Additionally, CodeCash transactions are handled by Stripe, so all of your financial information is managed and stored securely by them — not CodeCash. CodeCash also employs the following key security features to help make your transaction on the platform are safe:

  • Cloud Infrastructure Security: All computing instances in the CodeCash Cloud are deployed in individual Virtual Private Containers (VPC) and the only access to the app server is from the mobile app or through secure web access, and web access is only permitted via a secure AWS PEM certificate.
  • Encryption on Device and In Transit: CodeCash leverages AES 256 bit encryption. All personal data is encrypted in the CodeCash database using the AWS Key Management Service (AWS KMS).
  • Banking and Card Account Information Not Stored in CodeCash: When debit or credit cards are added to CodeCash, account information is not transferred to, nor is it stored in CodeCash. The only information stored and displayed are the last five digits for the CodeCash identification number, which would be useless to a hacker. All handling of card accounts and account information is handled by Stripe.

Tips for Sending Money Safely

  • Confirm your recipient’s contact information: Make sure you are sending money to the correct recipient by verifying their QR code and Username inside the app. When in doubt, contact the recipient to double check you have the right account.
  • Beware of scams: If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. For example, is an online vendor offering you an unbelievable price on something and insisting you pay via CodeCash? Think twice. Make sure you only send money to CodeCash accounts you trust. Did you scan the QR code yourself? Does the QR code have the username you expected? Does the vendor have a public phone number, email or mailing address associated with their business? If in doubt, seek out other options to protect yourself.
  • Understand your payment options; If you aren’t sure about an account that is requesting money from you or aren’t sure you’ll get what you paid for, using your credit card may be a better payment option. Many credit card companies offer built-in buyer protections for cardholders. Check the terms and conditions of your credit card to see what’s offered. Unlike a credit card, CodeCash does not offer a protection program for payments made with CodeCash – for example, if you do not receive the item or the item is not as described or as you expected.
  • When sending large amounts of money you may want to send a small amount first to make sure you have everything right.

Report a Scam

A scam is when you knowingly send money to someone you do not know or trust. For example, someone tricked or persuaded you into sending the money, or promised that you would receive something in return that they did not provide. While we are unable to assist with getting your money back, it is important that our users have the ability to report this experience. We will review the information you provide us and take any actions we deem necessary to help prevent anyone else from having the same experience including, but not limited to, sharing the information with Stripe, opening an inquiry, and / or temporarily or permanently blocking the user associated with the account in question.

To report a scam related to a CodeCash user, please send us a message via the contact form on the website here.

We also urge you to report the use to your bank, credit union, or credit card company if you have not done so already.
